Reef Ball at Koh Racha

The Racha Resort and Spa and the Racha Seamaster Divers on Phuket’s Racha Yai Island will begin a Reef Ball project.

Reef Ball programmes restore ailing coral reefs and create new fishing and scuba-diving sites. The process involves artificial reef construction, coral propagation and training in coral transplants.

The Koh Racha project will be led by Todd Barber, chairman of the Reef Ball Foundation, and John Walch, an expert in coral propagation.

Koh Racha is the first island in Thailand to be accepted into the Reef Ball Foundation’s “Reefs Around the World” grant programme. In addition to support from Reef Ball Foundation, the Racha Resort and Spa has invested Bt2 million to support the programme.

Each reef ball costs approximately Bt2,000. The project will begin at Racha Yai Island and expand to other areas of coral reef degradation around Phuket, including the Phi Phi islands, says Suvit Khunkitti, Thailand’s natural resources and environment minister.
