Great News About Mira Costa High School That You Can Read In 60 Seconds
March 8, 2005
Armed with donations from local nurseries and
individuals and leading a team of over 100 volunteers, Alex Bergjans – an
active Boy Scout since 1st grade -- spent a recent Saturday refurbishing
the planters surrounding Mira Costa’s auditorium and the adjacent parking
lot. The beautification project marked the final step in Alex’s quest to
attain the ‘Eagle Scout’ award, the requirements of which include the
earning of 21 merit badges and the consistent demonstration of leadership
attributes. “A beautiful campus reflects positively on the students and
staff,” Alex explains. “Mira Costa is a great school, and I wanted to do
my part to make it better.” Alex would like to thank Dr Scott Wilbur; Carl
Leach, MCHS Plant Manager; Mike Marino, MCHS Maintenance Staff; the ASB;
Adria Holtzinger; Tom Given of Marina del Rey Garden Center; and Bill Ota
of Ota Nursery, all of whom helped to make the project a success.
Mira Costa students Ashley Okada, Matt
Richards, Scott Friedlander, Sarah Lesser, Robbie McCracken, Rachael
Hosley, and Taylor Debevec and will be spending a week in May in Baja,
California on ‘The Indian Trader,” a 72-foot ocean research vessel – their
reward for winning the Quik Science Challenge, sponsored by Quiksilver,
Inc. and USC’s Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies. As Robbie
McCracken explains, “The challenge was a series of projects that had to do
with marine biology. We had to complete an ocean audit (surveying teachers
and students about the use of ocean science curriculum), a public service
(for which the group presented a lesson on the ocean to Pacific Elementary
5th graders), a lesson plan, and a research proposal (concerning the use
of reef balls to repopulate depleting reefs). We got the project late
December and it was due early February. By the end of the second week in
February, we had heard that we had made it in the top three. We went to
USC and were interviewed by the judges. On Friday, February 14, we were
told that we got the first place prize.” Accolades go to these
environmentally-minded students and their Advisors from the Roundhouse
Oceanographic Teaching Station,Christine Buckius and Cali Turner. For more
